Coursera released its highly anticipated annual global skills report on Wednesday. It detailed the top in-demand skills of employers and the experts needed to thrive at the local and national level.
The ranking of skills showed where countries are as long as they are obscured and that they are the main areas of focus for experts within these regions.
However, one of the most exciting and obvious things from the report is the popularity, demand and growth of AI-related roles. In Coursera's AI Maturity Index, the US ranks fourth, and has a promising ecosystem that thrives to support innovation. “94% of US companies expect significant AI-driven transformations by 2030, particularly as Genai's rapid adoption could require up to 12 million career shifts by the end of the 10th year,” the report states.
One role that will help drive this wave of innovation, creativity, AI implementation and integration is the role of AI/ML experts. (ML means machine learning.)
“In the US, the role of AI and machine learning experts has grown by 142% year-on-year, far above the global average,” adds Coursera.
Why do you get a job as an AI/machine learning specialist?
In addition to high demand, this role pays very attractively. The average salary for AI/ML Specialists is currently $119,608 based on Glassdoor estimates, and does not include total compensation either. Total wages, including benefits, will be approximately $159,207 per year.

How to Become an AI/ML Specialist
To acquire the role of an AI expert or engineer, you need to have a strong foundation in areas such as mathematics, statistics, and algebra. If you're already enjoying these fields, you'll be perfectly suited to your role in AI.
Some of the necessary foundations are as follows:
- Intensive degrees in computer science, mathematics, and even data science.
- Without a degree, you can self-study through AI certifications such as Google's Career Certificates and professional certificates provided by Coursera by other providers such as Microsoft and IBM. For example, Google's AI Essentials or Data Analysis Certificates are pursuing according to the specific path. Not all AI courses are relevant, so you can get more specific certifications to take on so that you can niche down and hi in certain areas that require a very specific skill set like NLP, image processing, etc.
- Demonstrate continuous development using some degree of certification, especially as the industry is evolving rapidly.
- Most importantly, you'll need to build a portfolio of practical and practical projects. Create your own mock projects and build your collection. To add to your collection, do contract or freelance work. This will build your experience and prove that your employer has the skills to gging. Beyond your resume, you will achieve proficiency.
