Jakarta – The Japanese government plans to promote the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and other digital technologies to support Japanese language education for children from foreign backgrounds.
Sources familiar with this say that amidst shortage of staff capable of serving native languages in various languages such as Portuguese, Mandarin and Spanish, guidelines are expected to be created to generate AI to generate effective teaching methods for subjects outside of Japan.
The Ministry of Education plans to include related expenses in its budget applications for 2026 from April next year to complete these guidelines from April next year, sources said it was quoted from Kyojima News on September 25th.
According to the ministry, as of May 2023, there were approximately 69,000 students who needed Japanese language education registered in elementary, junior high, state high schools and outstanding schools as of May 2023.

The ministry is also planning to expand its budget proposals that begin in fiscal year 2025 to subsidize local governments to recruit these language instructors and support staff, and organize a guidance programme to encourage school enrollment for non-school foreign children.
