The artificial intelligence tool is a “game changer” in the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI), and Director Tulsi Gabbard today says that AI is helping the Intelligence Community (IC) arrive after its core mission.
Speaking at the AWS Summit in Washington, DC on June 10, Gabbard explained that he is helping AI provide relevant, timely, objective, high quality intelligence to those who need it.
“We had an intelligence community chatbot that was deployed throughout the enterprise,” Gabbard said. “To open it and make AI applications available in the top secret cloud was a game changer. Once again, looking at all the IC elements, these are the better tools we get after our mission.”
Gabbard said her team is looking into the most effective tools for IC. ODNI points out that if you are purchasing AI tools that can be used with all 18 intelligence community elements, you can “save a lot of money.”
Additionally, Gabbard said her newly founded Director Initiative Group (DIG) focuses on where ICs want to be in the future, but that they are leveraging AI to rebuild ICs' trust and transparency.
“Some examples of AI and machine learning application that we already use in this director's initiative group have been about declassification,” Gabbard said. “We have released thousands of documents related to the assassination of JFK and Sen. Robert F. Kennedy. We were able to do that by using AI tools much faster than the previous ones.”
Another example she shared is that DIG uses AI tools to help analysts sort open source enterprises faster than before.
“For example, 10,000 hours of media content usually takes 48 hours for eight people and an hour with some of the AI tools we have here,” Gabbard said. “So these are some of the many examples this Director's initiative group is focusing on. Again, we can make it possible to actually provide these efficiency and these tools to the entire company, not just ODNI.”
Gabbard emphasized that when deploying AI, it is about operating intelligence that “not only is it intelligent, but also to make sure it is applicable, usable and operational to all customers.”
Dave Levy, vice president of the world-wide public sector at Amazon Web Services (AWS), has joined Gabbard to announce that AWS is expanding its support for the US government's classification mission with the new AWS Secret-West region.
“We are pleased to announce that Amazon is planning to launch this second secret area by the end of the year,” says Levy. “These regions are certified to support workloads up to the secret classification level.”
Another thing announcement Released Tuesday, AWS said its defense and national security customers and partners can deploy multi-region architectures.
“Customers using the new AWS Secret-West region can see the key missions enhanced by the operational speed, scalability, security and innovation that AWS offers, using advanced technology from the world's leading cloud providers,” says Levy.
