[STOCKHOLM] CCIA Europe, a high-tech bee group whose members include Alphabet, Meta and Apple, urged the European Union to suspend the implementation of AI laws on Thursday, saying the rushing rollout is putting AI aspirations on the continent at risk.
The groundbreaking European AI rules came into effect last June, with various regulations being implemented in stages.
Important provisions of the EU AI Act, including rules for the General-Purpose AI (GPAI) model, were scheduled to apply on August 2nd. However, some of the GPAI, which is expected to be released on May 2nd, has been delayed.
“We are pleased to announce that we are committed to providing a range of services to our customers,” said Daniel Friedraender, senior vice president of CCIA Europe.
Political leaders such as Swedish Prime Minister Wolf Christerson also called AI rules “confusing” and asked the EU to suspend the law ahead of meetings with other EU leaders in Brussels on Thursday.
A study by Amazon Web Services shows that over two-thirds of European companies have struggled to understand their responsibility under EU AI law.
The EU AI law is more comprehensive than the US Light Touch voluntary compliance approach, while Chinese approach aims to maintain social stability and state control.
“We are currently implementing AI law,” EU technology chief Henna Wilkunen said earlier this month that EU lawmakers were asked if they would consider a temporary suspension to implement AI law.
“I want to implement it in a very innovation-friendly way… The main concern among some stakeholders is that this is hindering innovation.” Reuters
