Google's DeepMind, OpenAI employees claim companies are hiding 'extinction'-level AI threats

In an open letter, some former employees of OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google's DeepMind warned that AI poses great risks to humanity. The letter calls on companies to increase transparency and foster a culture of criticism to hold them accountable. “AI companies possess significant non-public information about the capabilities and limitations of their systems. We do not expect all companies to voluntarily share this information,” the letter, signed by 13 people, said.

The report states that artificial intelligence could increase misinformation, entrench existing inequalities, and enable autonomous weapons systems that could even lead to “human extinction.” The letter revealed that AI companies and governments around the world are already aware of these risks. With the right guidance from policymakers, the scientific community, and the public, these risks can be mitigated, the report said.

The open letter further emphasizes that AI companies hold confidential information about the capabilities and limitations of their systems and do not voluntarily share it: “AI companies hold a great deal of non-public information about the capabilities and limitations of their systems, the adequacy of their protective measures, and the level of risk of various types of harm. However, at present they are only obligated to share a small amount of this information with governments and no obligation to share it with private society. We cannot expect all companies to share information voluntarily,” it states.

The report noted that because there is no government oversight of these companies, their boards of directors' confidentiality agreements prevent them from speaking publicly about these concerns. “Normal whistleblower protections are inadequate because they focus on illegal activity, while many of the risks we worry about remain unregulated. Given the history of similar cases across our industry, it is not surprising that some of us fear various forms of retaliation. We are not the first to face or speak about these issues,” the report said.

The letter is supported by Yoshua Bengio, a computer scientist renowned for his work on artificial neural networks and deep learning, Geoffrey Hinton, the godfather of AI, and British computer scientist Stuart Russell.

In an exclusive interview with Tech Today last year, Russell said the deployment of AI models was a recipe for disaster, with potential consequences ranging from spreading misinformation to encouraging individuals to harm themselves or others. “The power of AI grows every day, and it's critical that we take a step back to ensure that these powerful technologies are developed and deployed responsibly and safely,” he said.
