A recent Microsoft study ranked Taiwan 23rd in the world in the use of artificial intelligence (AI), with 28.4% of Taiwanese reporting using the technology.

Microsoft Al Economy Institute said in a release on Thursday that 16.3 percent of the world's population used AI tools last year, indicating that adoption of the technology is accelerating around the world.

In Taiwan, AI usage increased from 26.4% to 28.4% last year, surpassing the United States (28.3%) by a small margin.

Although the United States is a world leader in AI research and development, the adoption of the technology in the workforce has been slower than in smaller and medium-sized economies that rely more on AI technology and digitalization, the institute said.

The study revealed a disparity between developed and developing countries, with AI usage rates at 24.7% and 14.1%, respectively.

According to the institute, the UAE has the highest AI usage rate in the world at 54%.

In 2017, Abu Dhabi established the Emirati Ministry of State for Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy and Remote Work Applications, and public trust in the technology rose to 67%, compared to 32% in the US.

According to the institute, South Korea recorded the highest growth in AI use last year, rising from 25th to 18th place.

This change is thought to be due to improvements in the Korean language functionality of the algorithm model.

The passage of Seoul's AI Basic Law and the creation of a strategic government agency to manage the technology, as well as the trend of using ChatGPT to generate anime images similar to the style of Studio Ghibli, also played a role in boosting the technology's popularity in the country, the newspaper said.

China's open source AI DeepSeek has reportedly succeeded in gaining large numbers of users in its own country, as well as in Russia, Belarus, and Iran.

He added that the main challenge for the industry is to extend the benefits of AI to more regions and close the adoption gap between countries.
