Fidji Simo, retired Instacart chief executive, headed to Openai to outline his vision for the newly created role of the application ahead of his official start with the ChatGPT maker next month.
Simo will launch a new role on August 18th, an Openai spokesperson said. In a blog post posted on the company's website on Monday, she set a tone about how she would assume that more people could use the company's artificial intelligence technology, rather than focusing on the hands of wealthy and connected people. She did not specify a roadmap for her product, but she considered how AI could be useful: knowledge, health, creative expression, financial freedom, time, and support.
“We must be intentional about how we build and share these technologies, which will lead to greater opportunities and prosperity for more people,” she writes. “Today's choices shape whether the coming transformation will lead to greater empowerment for everyone or a concentration of wealth and power for a small number of people.”
The Simo recruitment comes as Openai is about to develop a business model to support advances in AI. The company announced in early May that 39-year-old SIMO would assume the operational obligations held by current CEO Sam Altman. This will allow Altman to focus on a broader strategy, the company said.
Simo joined Openai's board of directors in early 2024 as part of a new board slate set up after Altman's brief expulsion and return in late 2023.
Instacart said in May that CEO Chris Rogers will replace SIMO on August 15th as CEO of the grocery delivery company.
