- Sony has patented an AI-generated podcast hosted by PlayStation characters
- Character voices are generated by AI and present game news to players.
- The AI podcast host will also discuss hardware and software updates, and may even “make jokes at the expense of video game players.”
Sony has reportedly been granted a new patent for AI-generated podcasts voiced by PlayStation characters.
As spotted by Tech4Gamers, Sony’s new patent, titled LLM-based Generated Podcasts for Gamers, aims to create personalized podcasts for gamers hosted from its platform, rather than tutorial videos or guides found online.
“As recognized herein, video game platforms currently lack the ability to provide unique and targeted content to keep gamers up to date with what is happening on the platform,” the patent description reads. “At this time, there are no suitable solutions to the computer-related technical problems mentioned above.”
The patent, filed in July 2024 and recently granted at the end of January, is also described as a “tool for generating data-related news podcasts,” which present news in the voices of video game characters played by video game players.
This suggests that Sony is aiming to use generated AI voices developed from PlayStation characters. god of warKratos created these podcast episodes.
This describes a scenario where a player boots up the console and is greeted with a message that says “Your personalized podcast is available today” and appears to be tailored to the player’s recent gaming session.
The patent also suggests that players can request to exclude information such as news about games, or to include details about games they don’t already own.
“In one implementation, the data associated with the video game player’s profile may include data related to the video game player’s connections indicated in the video game player’s profile, including podcasts showing news related to the gameplay of that connection,” the patent states.
Sony also says that two video game characters can collaborate in a single podcast to create crossover scenarios, discussing topics such as trophy accomplishments and hardware/software updates, as shown in the image above.
“In other news, we have a software update for Gen X, so update now,” reads an image showing the AI host. The AI co-host added, “Try the spin move on the boss again this time!”
It also states that the AI podcast host “may include jokes at the video game player’s expense” and “may include recommendations for actions the video game player should take in the video game.”
This is just one of many patents Sony has reportedly filed involving the use of generative AI. Last month, the company patented new AI technology to control PlayStation games when players get stuck, and recently patented a touchscreen controller that has no buttons or thumbsticks.
