When used responsibly, artificial intelligence (AI) can be a valuable tool that makes our lives easier. However, creative occupations are increasingly threatened by the rise of generative AI. This technology is often misused to produce so-called “art” and individuals pass it on as their own. Artists, musicians and actors criticize the use of AI in creative projects, including animation, illustration, music, and film.
Recently, the Malaysians expressed their anger after a local media group unveiled its first AI band, Project Thric3, which they described as an insult to real talent. Artists who have studied and hone their skills will simply see the opportunity to be handed over to AI. Now it appears that another company is facing backlash for similar reasons.
Yesterday (Monday, September 8th), it was reported that under Media Prima, TV3, one of Malaysia's oldest and most well-known television stations, has announced a new animated series entitled “Misteri di Sebalik Order” (Mystery Behind Order), created entirely with generative AI. The series follows Capybara's life, working as a food delivery rider and falling in love with a mysterious rabbit-like creature named Mechnab.
The first episode premiered on @aiseyymentv3_'s Tiktok channel on September 6th, and as expected, encountered a heavy backlash from netizens. Many criticized TV3 for endorsing so-called animation, and accused the station of being “lazy” for not hiring real human talent. Others dismissed the series as “slop”, highlighting numerous animation errors in the opening episode. Some viewers were not completely surprised to note that the station had already replaced the iconic Azan broadcast with AI-generated visuals.
Others also pointed out that Media Prima introduced the first AI radio announcer on Fly FM. This is a move that drew intense criticism from netizens who auditioned specifically for their roles but have never been given the opportunity to test their skills.
