Sony announced that it will partner with Bandai Namco Holdings, Inc. and Bandai Namco Entertainment, the parent company of Bandai Namco Entertainment, on a pilot initiative aimed at using generative artificial intelligence in video content production. Engadget writes about it.

In a new report on financial results and corporate strategy, Sony President and CEO Hiroki Totoki called artificial intelligence “a catalyst that amplifies human imagination and creates new possibilities,” stressing that the technology will not replace artists and creators.

Totoki said the two companies have already seen “significant improvements in speed and productivity per person” from joint projects, but “challenges remain for field professionals in terms of consistency of results and ease of management.” He also said that artificial intelligence has enabled project participants to achieve exceptional levels of production that were previously unattainable due to time constraints.

Despite the fact that Bandai Namco is primarily involved in video games, Hiroki Totoki did not elaborate on the application of AI in this field. At the same time, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Hideaki Nishino emphasized that artificial intelligence is being actively introduced into the production of PlayStation games. He noted that this technology could shorten long game development cycles and open doors for new developers.

Nishino acknowledged that the use of AI will lead to a significant increase in the amount of content, but asserted that the company’s game studio is focused on producing only high-quality products.

An example of an AI application is the Mockingbird tool used by Naughty Dog and San Diego Studio to animate faces on 3D models after motion capture. Additionally, AI helps create realistic hair animations using videos of real hairstyles, and is also used to upscale images on PS5 Pro using the PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) feature.

Nishino emphasized that a game’s vision, design, and emotional impact have always been the result of the work of the company’s creative teams, and artificial intelligence will only extend that capability.
