Just an hour after Canon announced a new product, don’t let one of your biggest rivals get the better of you EOS R6VSony has announced a new camera in its R series, the α7R VI.
Although ideally a bit more of a photo camera than a video camera (as opposed to the new EOS R6 V that was just announced), the α7R VI looks like a nice upgrade for one of Sony’s most popular and capable hybrid content creation cameras.
It will be equipped with a newly developed 66.8MP Exmor RS BSI sensor, making it the highest resolution full-frame, full-stack sensor in an α7 camera to date, making the α7R VI more than capable of serving as a top-end mirrorless option for photographers and videographers alike.

New Sony α7R VI mirrorless camera
Equipped with a 66.8MP full-frame full-stack CMOS sensor, the Sony a7R VI is set to deliver 5.6x faster readout speeds than previous models and an improved AI-based processing system for more intelligent AF, AE, and AWB functionality across the board. This is a really big step forward for the brand in terms of speed and intelligence for its camera line.

Still, while Sony’s reputation for quality and science remains, the big selling point of this new α7R VI is that the BSI CMOS sensor can deliver richer image quality with higher clarity, lower shadow noise, and a wider 16 stops of dynamic range compared to the previous generation.
Full frame 8K 30p video
It’s no surprise that this new Sony α7R VI is at the top of the specs sheet, but aside from the photo capabilities, check out the very impressive video specs and features as well. The big news here is that the top-end recording format will be a 10-bit, full-frame 8K 30/24p level with 8.2K oversampling.
The Sony a7R VI can also record 4K 120p via 5K oversampling with full pixel readout. Additionally, when using Super 35 recording area, 4K 60p footage can use 6.3K oversampling to improve detail, and 4K 120 high-speed recording is possible with 4.6K oversampling.
The a7R VI also includes S-Cinetone profiles, S-Log2/3 gamma curves, ProRes RAW output over HDMI, and the ability to import LUTs for greater color control for a variety of recording needs.
AI is another big theme in the α7R VI, with the camera featuring new AI subject recognition technology that leverages the AI processing unit and improved framing stabilizer mode, allowing automatic cropping and recomposition to keep the subject in the center of the image.
