OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said the company could launch a new AI-powered search engine to rival Google on May 13, the day before the Android maker's I/O 2024 event. He denied reports that there was. However, Altman said he will be making several new announcements regarding ChatGPT and GPT-4 at Monday's event.
Refuting reports that he is launching a new search engine and announcing GPT-5, Altman wrote in a post on X (formerly Twitter): People will love it! It feels like magic to me. Monday at 10 a.m. PT. ”
Reuters reported on Thursday that OpenAI plans to launch an AI-powered search engine on May 13, with the aim of giving tough competition to Google and Perplexity AI. Notably, reports from Bloomberg and The Information have made similar claims in the past, but did not provide a specific release date.
What is the current state of AI search engine competition?
While OpenAI may not announce a new search competitor to Google on May 13, there's still a good chance the company will announce a new search product at some point in the future. In fact, a report from The Verge earlier this week claimed that OpenAI is actively poaching Google employees for teams working to deliver search products soon.
There has been speculation that OpenAI could challenge Google's dominance in the search market, especially since its global debut in late 2022. Perhaps sensing the upcoming battle, Google announced a new experimental AI-powered search engine for iOS and Android in 2023.
Apart from OpenAI, Google also faces competition from Perplexity, an AI startup valued at more than $1 billion. Perplexity's AI search allows users to get direct answers to their questions along with quotes and images within the results. The startup revealed earlier this year that it has more than 10 million monthly active users.
