Small businesses abandon manual workflows for BILL AI tools

AI For Business

Companies and their treasurers continued to deploy artificial intelligence (AI) agents and other digital tools in the quarter that ended Dec. 31, BILL executives said Thursday (Feb. 5) during the company’s second-quarter fiscal 2026 earnings call.

BILL’s financial operations platform is used by 498,000 companies and 9,500 accounting firms, according to investor materials released in conjunction with the conference call. The number of companies increased from 481,000 the previous year. Additionally, 8.3 million businesses use BILL’s proprietary B2B payments network.

“By encompassing the critical workflows that our customers rely on every day, we are driving increased engagement and transaction volume across our platforms,” BILL CEO and Founder René Lacerte said on the conference call.

Lacerte said the number of small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) using BILL’s invoice financing services increased by nearly 50% year-over-year in the latest quarter, and loan amounts increased by more than 30%.

“Invoice financing is a fast-growing, emerging payment solution that provides flexible capital exactly when you need it, addressing critical operational needs for many small and medium-sized businesses,” Lacerte said.

SMBs also adopted the BILL Cash Account, which was launched during the quarter. When the company introduced the product in October, it said the cash flow solution allows businesses to keep operating cash in high APY accounts.

“We see Cash Accounts as an opportunity to bring billions of dollars in offline spending to our network each month and grow our wallet share,” said Lacerte. “Since the start of the second quarter, early indications indicate that more than 70% of Cash Account users have increased their spending on our network.”

BILL’s AI agents began completing tasks for small and medium-sized businesses during the quarter. Launched in October, the AI agent collects and verifies W-9s, matches receipts, accelerates user onboarding, and performs mundane tasks.

During the call, Lacerte said nearly 10,000 customers have activated W-9 agents, and those agents have collected 40,000 W-9s. He added that the bill expects the agency to collect and automate 3 million W-9s by the end of 2026, “saving customers thousands of weeks of manual work.”

BILL has also added new features for accountants. These include procurement, multi-entity support, and advanced reporting capabilities in the platform’s accountant console. Lacerte said during the conference call that these tools are becoming increasingly important as AI reshapes the accounting profession.

“As the profession adapts to a rapidly changing technology environment, our fundamental knowledge of the back office of small businesses and accountants serving small businesses is unparalleled,” Russert said. “This capability, combined with our broad platform, enables firms to transform routine trading operations into high-value automated advisory services.”
