SIU offers access to Google AI Professional Certification through Grow with Google
One of the most popular and most misunderstood technologies today is artificial intelligence (AI). But when used properly, creatively, and thoughtfully, AI can enable those who learn how to harness its power to advance at incredible speed and in previously unimagined ways.
As part of a system-wide effort, Southern Illinois University Carbondale is partnering with the National Association of Higher Education Systems and Google to tailor career-aligned AI training at no cost to learners through the new Grow with Google initiative (GwG).
The GwG program offers several learning structures. There’s a foundation course that takes about an hour to complete, and an AI specialty course that builds on the foundation and then dives deeper into AI (about 4 hours). The final component is a complete AI professional certification program incorporating individual courses that guide learners through real-world applications of AI in the workplace (approximately 10 hours).
Designed with broad accessibility in mind, no prior experience is required to earn the certificate. Using tools like Gemini and Google Workspace, learners engage in hands-on exercises and activities that mirror workplace tasks to develop solutions, generate content, and streamline daily responsibilities.
Participants will learn how to use AI as a creative and analytical partner to support activities such as brainstorming ideas, synthesizing research, building presentations, and analyzing data. The program also focuses on responsible AI practices, ensuring learners understand how to apply these tools effectively and ethically.
The GwG initiative is designed to serve multiple audiences, including students looking to strengthen their resumes, faculty integrating workforce-related content in their courses, staff pursuing professional development, community organizations and individuals looking to gain marketable skills, and employers looking to upskill their employees. As AI continues to reshape roles and responsibilities across industries, this training will help individuals maintain a competitive edge.
