Just days after Disney announced a $1 billion investment in OpenAI, the company is already seeing the dire impact this will have on its intellectual property. Users have already begun using AI-generated clips on Sora to create inappropriate, sexist, and racist videos using Disney IP.
Some of the videos people have created are Pixar-like Holocaust movie reenactment with Jeffrey Epstein as the main character “The boy in striped pajamas,“ Including Pixar.Adolf Hitler style. There are also many Pixar-style videos reenacting 9/11, as well as videos about racism, sexism, and homophobia.
Disney's three-year agreement with OpenAI will allow users to use OpenAI's Sora video generator and ChatGPT image platform to create AI-powered videos featuring hundreds of iconic Disney, Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars characters. This agreement explicitly excludes the use of the talent's likeness or voice to protect the rights of the actors.
The deal with OpenAI comes on the heels of Disney CEO Bob Iger announcing plans for Disney to expand its use of artificial intelligence and allow users to contribute their own content to Disney+. This opens up more possibilities for users, but at the expense of those who originally created the content.
The Writers Guild of America, SAG-AFTRA, and environmental activists have already expressed opposition to the deal, and the unions representing Hollywood writers and actors are concerned that AI could use their intellectual property without their consent or use actors' likenesses and voices without their permission.
While actors and writers are concerned about their work, environmentalists are criticizing Disney's hypocrisy in signing a contract with OpenAI without considering the environmental impact of AI, despite promoting environmental protection at Disney's Animal Kingdom.
It's only been a few days since Disney signed the deal, but the company is already starting to realize some of the implications of allowing unrestricted use of its IP on Sora. These impacts are likely to worsen as more Disney IP becomes available on the site.
Fans can expect to see more Disney characters getting into scary situations and saying mean things in the videos. Sooner or later, it will become difficult to distinguish between what Disney has authorized and what humans have created using AI.
