One executive compares business models of companies such as Openai and Meta AI with Marvel Studios.

In an episode of the “A16Z Podcast” released Tuesday, Ben Scharfstein, AI's Enterprise Applications product head, said his most controversial opinion on AI is that AI's foundational companies are more similar to content studios than software companies.

“I think my hottest take is that the right way to think about Foundation Labs is that they're like a film studio,” he said. “What that means is that they invest a lot of money in blockbuster authors who have a relatively short period of time to pay them back.”

Scharfstein is Heads Heads Heads Heads to build and deploy generative AI solutions for other companies in AI's enterprise application business. Scale AI, which received a $14.3 billion investment from Meta in June, is well known for its data annotation business and is useful for leading technology clients. Executives compared the large language modeling company to Hollywood Studios Marvel, famous for its blockbuster superhero film franchise.

“Marvel, you're investing in the 'Avengers' and you might invest a billion dollars in it and then pay you back over the next 18 months,” he said. “After that, that's pretty irrelevant.”

Like “The Avengers,” he said companies like Openai are building franchises using GPT built from previous models.

“It's very similar. You can turn that franchise into a video game, and then it might be like software,” he said. “But the truth is, model companies look more like content studios than software companies.”

Scale AI is building custom-generated AI solutions using models that include Openai's GPT-4, Cohere's Command and Meta's Llama 2, according to its website. In June, Openai said it had hit $10 billion in annual recurring revenue in less than three years since launching the popular ChatGpt Chatbot.

Last month, Scale AI reduced its workforce of 1,400 by 14% in cuts that affected 200 employees in its generative AI sector.

In an internal email viewed by Business Insider, interim CEO Jason Droege said the scale increased capacity on Genai “too fast in the past year” and “lack of resources” other departments, such as public sector units.

Scaleai did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
