Smartphone manufacturers have been leveraging artificial intelligence for years to improve image quality, erase unwanted objects, and generate entirely new visuals. Samsung’s latest Galaxy AI feature takes a different path. It helps users focus on what already exists, rather than creating something that doesn’t exist.

My FanCam, which debuted on Galaxy Z Fold8, Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, and Galaxy Z Flip8, is an AI-powered video editing tool that automatically follows selected people across recorded videos. Whether it’s your favorite performer at a concert, a kid in a school play, or a player on the soccer field, this feature intelligently crops and reframes footage to keep that person at the center of the action.

The result is personalized videos without the painstaking work of manually editing each frame.

My FanCam is built into Samsung’s Gallery app and works after a video has already been recorded.

Users can simply open a compatible video, launch My FanCam, tap the person they want to follow, and let Galaxy AI do the rest. The software analyzes the footage, recognizes the selected subject, and continually adjusts the crop as the person moves through the frame.

Finished clips can be exported in a variety of aspect ratios, including portrait formats designed for Instagram Reels, TikTok, and YouTube Shorts, and landscape formats for traditional viewing.

Rather than forcing users to shoot separate videos for each platform, Samsung is allowing a single recording to be reused later.

The name of this feature is no coincidence. Fancams have long been a part of K-pop culture, with the videos focusing only on one member of the group performing rather than the entire stage. Originally created by fans attending concerts and television performances, these clips have evolved into one of the defining forms of modern music fandom, generating millions of views online.

Samsung itself is a South Korean company with long-standing ties to the K-Pop industry, and has effectively brought its editing process directly to smartphones.

My FanCam automates the process with just a few taps, without the need for professional editing software or painstaking manual cropping.

Samsung used a concert performance to demonstrate this feature, but its usefulness extends far beyond musical events.

Parents filming a school performance can focus the camera on their child instead of searching for a line of performers. Sports enthusiasts can isolate their favorite athletes during local games, while families attending graduation ceremonies or dance recitals can quickly create clips that focus on a single person.

Reframing occurs post-recording, allowing users to focus on capturing the entire scene rather than trying to perfectly follow a specific person while filming.

Because of its flexibility, My FanCam could be one of Galaxy AI’s more practical additions. My FanCam reflects how video consumption on smartphones is increasing.

Although most videos today end up being distributed on vertical-first platforms, many continue to record important moments in landscape orientation. Samsung’s AI allows users to convert these clips into vertical videos without having to manually crop every scene.

This technology is not without its limitations. Because My FanCam crops the original footage to track the subject, some resolution is inevitably sacrificed in the final video. The more severe the crop, the more likely the image quality will be degraded, especially if the subject only occupies a small portion of the original frame.

Performance will vary depending on how the video was shot. Footage shot from a distance or in a crowded environment may have less room for accurate reframing, especially if digital zoom is required.
