Technology that uses AI to automatically detect and address software security vulnerabilities, gains global awareness

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. today announced that it took first place in the finals of the AI Cyber Challenge (AIXCC), the world's largest AI security technology competition, held in Las Vegas on August 8th.
The AI Cyber Challenge is an honorable competition hosted by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), a research and development laboratory of the US Department of Defense, with a total prize of $22.5 million.
The final took place at DEF Con 33, a major hacking and security conference. Universities, research institutes and global high-tech companies from various countries participate and engage in fierce competition in AI security technology.
Samsung participated in the contest as Team Atlanta, a joint team of Samsung Research (DX) led by advanced research institutes in the Device Experience (DX) in collaboration with security experts from leading universities at global universities, including Georgia Tech (Georgia Tech), Korea Institute of Advanced Science and Technology (KAIST), and Pohan University Science and Technology (Science and Technology).
In the two-year competition starting in 2023, 42 teams competed in last year's semi-finals, and only seven teams competed in this year's final.
“Samsung Electronics has achieved meaningful results by demonstrating AI-based security technology capabilities in the global security technology competition,” said Taesoo Kim, assistant manager at Samsung Research, who led Team Atlanta. “We will continue to expand our collaboration with global security experts to further improve the security technical capabilities of Samsung Electronics.”
Team Atlanta reached the final with outstanding technical capabilities, being the only participants to detect unintended vulnerabilities in the semi-finals, proving world-class security technical capabilities in the finals, rather than flaws set for competition.
Finals used only AI-powered security technologies without human intervention to analyze source code vulnerabilities and assess each team's ability to apply security patches.
By showing off key expertise in accurate and sophisticated AI security technology, Team Atlanta won the number one honor and won $4 million.
Based on its achievements, Samsung plans to develop AI-powered next-generation security solutions that can autonomously identify and mitigate security vulnerabilities, enabling continuous enhancements to product and service security.
