Samsung brings technology and innovation across advanced semiconductors, data centers, shipbuilding, cloud services and maritime technology

Openai, Samsung Electronics, Samsung SDS, Samsung C&T, and Samsung Leavy Industries today announced their Intention (LOI) on a strategic partnership to accelerate advances in global AI data center infrastructure and develop future technologies in related areas. This vast collaboration will combine the collective strengths and leadership of Samsung companies across semiconductors, data centers, shipbuilding, cloud services and maritime technology.

The signing ceremony was held at Samsung's headquarters in Seoul, South Korea, with Young Hyun Jun, vice-chairman and CEO of Samsung Electronics. Song Choi, vice-chairman and CEO of Samsung Heavy Industries. Sechul Oh, President and CEO of Samsung C&T; Junehee Lee, President and CEO of Samsung SDS.

Samsung Electronics

Samsung Electronics will work with Openai as a strategic memory partner to deliver advanced semiconductor solutions to Openai's global Stargate initiative. Samsung is expected to reach up to 900,000 drum wafers per month, helping to meet this need with its extensive lineup of high-performance DRAM solutions.

As a comprehensive semiconductor solution provider, Samsung's key technologies span memory, logic, and foundries in a diverse product portfolio that supports a complete AI workflow from training to inference.

The company also brings differentiated capabilities to sophisticated chip packages and uneven integration between memory and system semiconductors, enabling it to provide a unique solution for OpenAI.

Samsung SDS

Samsung SDS has signed a potential partnership with OpenAI to collaborate on AI data centers and provide enterprise AI services.

Leveraging its advanced data center technology expertise, Samsung SDS will work with Openai in the design, development and operation of Stargate AI data centers. Under LOI, Samsung SDS is now able to provide consulting, deployment and management services to businesses seeking to integrate OpenAI's AI model into their internal systems.

Additionally, Samsung SDS will sign a reseller partnership for Openai's services in Korea and will support local businesses in adopting Openai's ChatGPT Enterprise Offering.

Samsung C&T and Samsung Heavy Industries

Samsung C&T and Samsung Leave Industries will work with Openai to advance the global AI data center with a special focus on joint development of floating data centers.

Floating data centers are considered to have more advantages than data centers as they can address land rarity and reduced cooling costs. Still, their technical complexity has so far been limited to wider deployments.

Based on proprietary technology, Samsung C&T and Samsung Leavy Industries will explore the infrastructure of floating data centers as well as opportunities to pursue projects at floating power plants and control centers.

Samsung plans to start with a landmark partnership with Openai to become one of the world's top three AI countries, fully supporting South Korea's goals to create new opportunities on the ground.

Samsung is also investigating the wider adoption of ChatGpt within the company to drive AI transformation in the workplace.
