SEOUL: Samsung said on Thursday it has acquired British artificial intelligence (AI) and knowledge graph technology startup Oxford Semantic Technologies to bolster its in-device AI capabilities.
The South Korean tech giant did not disclose financial terms of the deal, according to Yonhap News Agency.
Founded in 2017 by Oxford University's Professors Ian Horrocks, Boris Motich and Bernardo Cuenca Grau, Oxford Semantic Technologies specialises in cutting-edge knowledge representation and semantic reasoning technologies.
Knowledge graph technology stores information as an interconnected web of related ideas and processes data similarly to human memory and reasoning. This technology is essential for developing advanced, personalized AI solutions by integrating and connecting personal data about habits and usage patterns.
Oxford Semantic Technologies has successfully commercialized knowledge graph technology to optimize data processing and enable advanced inference both in the cloud and on-device.

Samsung said Oxford Semantic Technologies' knowledge graph expertise will significantly enhance its on-device AI technology, especially in its latest Galaxy S24 smartphone series. The integration aims to provide a more personalized user experience while protecting personal data on the device.
The technology will be applicable to a wide range of Samsung Electronics products, from mobile devices to televisions and home appliances.
