Marvel actor Simu Liu and Deadpool and Wolverine co-writer Rhett Reese aren’t the only ones taking issue with the viral Seadance 2.0 AI video of Brad Pitt fighting Tom Cruise…
Shortly after the scene was shared on social media by director Ruairi Robinson, the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) called out X, TikTok’s Chinese owner ByteDance, and those behind the AI video generation model.
“SAG-AFTRA stands with the studio in condemning the blatant infringement enabled by Bytedance’s new AI video model, Seedance 2.0. Infringement includes the unauthorized use of members’ voices and likenesses,” the statement reads. “This is unacceptable and undermines the ability of human talent to earn a living. Seadance 2.0 ignores the fundamental principles of law, ethics, industry standards, and consent. Responsible AI development requires accountability, and that is not present here.”
SAG-AFTRA chairman Sean Astin, known for his work on The Goonies and Stranger Things, used his face in one of Seadance’s early videos, in which The Lord of the Rings character Samwise Gamgee suggests to Frodo that he “take the Eagles straight to Mount Doom.”
According to Variety, the House of Mouse also sent a cease-and-desist letter to ByteDance General Counsel John Rogovin on Friday, February 13, alleging that the company is unfairly building “a pirated library of Disney’s copyrighted characters from Star Wars, Marvel, and other Disney franchises as if Disney’s coveted intellectual property were free, public domain clip art.”
In response to this action, ByteDance has pledged to stop AI from copying Hollywood movies, according to Deadline. ”[ByteDance] “We respect intellectual property rights and have heard your concerns about Seadance 2.0. We are taking steps to strengthen our current safeguards to prevent the unauthorized use of our intellectual property and likeness by our users.”
