Runway AI, IMAX Sign Film Festival Deal

IMAX is entering the AI business.

The exhibition giant is working with Runway AI for the limited run in the latter film festival offering.

IMAX will operate shorts from the 2025 AI Film Festival from August 17th to August 20th in 10 locations in the US, including Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Chicago, Seattle, Dallas, Boston, Atlanta, Denver, and Washington, DC. “The quality, diversity and storytelling of these films deserve a premium viewing experience,” added Cristobal Valenzuela, co-founder of Runway.

The announcement shows how the new tech revolution can unfold in a different way than it did in Hollywood. Streaming often opposes exhibitors with key new players, but AI tools are not necessarily at least opposed to theater owners. They can potentially watch the personalization elements of AI, but can be seen as a way to create a product that will attract fresh audiences to the theatre.

New York-based Runway, which produces numerous AI filmmaking tools, hosts its annual film festivals in New York and Los Angeles. This year's event, held last month at the Alistair Hall at Lincoln Center in New York and at the Broadstage Theatre in Los Angeles, produced 6,000 submissions and attracted crowds to both theatres.

“Three years ago, this was a really crazy idea,” Valenzuela said at an event in New York. “Today, millions of people are making billions of videos using the tools we dreamed of.” Films are still evolving as SOUND and photorealistic images remain an iterative process for AI companies (working was often a dream).

Many studios and distributors, such as Netflix, use AI tools unofficially, but runways in particular court the industry and have signed formal deals with AMC Networks and Lionsgate.

AI generally confiscates and terrifies the imagination of the film in films, and many fear that it can replace humans and humanity, claiming it can unlock the film's new golden age.
