Rumor has it that ChatGPT developer OpenAI will be involved in a major artificial intelligence (AI) upgrade for the iPhone, although Apple is still months away from revealing everything at its Worldwide Developers Conference in June.
The next generation of iOS is expected to focus on the use of AI, and rumors about what that will look like have been circulating for months.
Bloomberg reported that Apple has stepped up talks with OpenAI about the iPhone's generative AI capabilities.
Citing “people familiar with the matter,” he said the next iPhone maker is “looking for partners to power features like chatbots similar to OpenAI's ChatGPT.”
This comes just a month after other conversations were said to be taking place, including Alphabet Inc.'s Google and others potentially being involved in discussions about the use of Gemini AI. Apple, OpenAI, and Google all declined to comment for this story.
Apple is said to have first talked to OpenAI several months ago, but details about the partnership have not yet been revealed. The tight-lipped Cupertino-based company will be sharing all about it at the upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference.
All about iOS 18 could be revealed at the World Developers Conference
The event is held annually at Apple Park and runs from June 10th to June 14th. They typically use this as a platform to introduce new software, technology, and hardware products.
At the 2023 event, Apple announced an AR/VR headset named Apple Vision Pro, macOS 14 Sonoma, and other hardware and updates.
Announcing the 2024 conference on Apple Newsroom, the iPhone maker said the event would bring “insights into new tools, frameworks, and features.”

Greg Jozwiak, Apple's senior vice president of marketing, further teased the event on X, urging people to “mark their calendars.” When describing this event, he capitalized the A and I for “Absolutely Incredible,” which may further the idea that this event focuses heavily on artificial intelligence.
