Some fans called AI, who call them “creepy” and “nasty” point to obvious mistakes about how the animation flaws and champions were rendered and animated.
League of Legends (LOL) and League of Legends: Wild Rift developer Riot Games is facing backlash from fans following accusations of using Generic AI to create a third-year anniversary video for Wild Rift China. The video was published on Weibo and was reposted on the official Wild Rift Subreddit on August 4th by winter_underdog. The post was then removed on Weibo due to backlash from Chinese and international fans.
Fans find strange mistakes in the Wild Lift anniversary video
In the video in question, Jinx, Seraphine, Aurora, Yasuo, and Ezreal prepare to celebrate Wild Rift's third anniversary. As soon as Jinx rose, the length of Yasuo's short, spiny hair, Aurora's hair length changed between frames, and the error generated in the AI began to appear, as if the tail afterwards were not attached in her middle.
When the minions arrived, the Redditors found Jinx swinging around what looked like a 1911 pistol. Meanwhile, Seraphine, a typically ranged AP champion, was shown to be fighting in a brawl, kicking monsters left and right. “It's Shelley Critical Seraphin, the jungle pick with the highest win rate rights rate right now,” he removed Redditor SardonicRelic in another related thread.
Additionally, Jinx's signature rocket launcher Fishbones appeared, but fired like a regular SMG or flamethrower.
The video also features a muscular tattoo character with pointy red hair. He didn't resemble the existing League of Legends champions, so fans speculated that he was a mix of set and Draven. Redditors like Interloper0691 are said to have been produced by AI for the songs used in the music video.
Beyond the visual mistakes that fans pointed out, others had strong opinions about the overall use of AI.
“You should be upset about this whether it looks good or not,” Redditor Kazoid13 said. “Riot is the wealthiest video game company in history, known especially for hiring artists and producing amazing films. That's disgusting.”
The backlash from content creators was also strong.
On X (formerly Twitter), the backlash is equally strong, with some LOL content creators getting very vocal about their opinions on the video. LOL partner @CharleeManderz pointed out that ad carry Ezreal had not used ranged attacks, but instead punched his minions with Lightsabers.
“WTF, how about this,” Dumbsyt said in his repost. Meanwhile, Necrit, one of LOL's most popular lore-related content creators, was simply reposted in a GIF.
This was not the first time Riot has been accused of using AI. Two years ago, the video, celebrating its 10th anniversary of Latin American Lol eSports, was flagged by players for the obvious use of AI. Various scenes have transformed fans into animals, monsters and more.
Gosugamers contacted Riot Games for comments on the issue.
