Rafael Nadal, 22-time Grand Slam champion and arguably the living legend of tennis, recently announced that he owns the copyright to all posts on his Instagram profile and does not consent to Meta or any other company using them to train AI models. He also called on Instagram to scrap its artificial intelligence program altogether.
Nadal's comments come after a fan recently published an AI dubbed version of the Spaniard's speech, in which the AI-made version of Nadal was seen insulting Roland Garros and Novak Djokovic. Before watching the video, here's the story Nadal posted:
“Roland Garros is mine. I've won here more than anyone before. I just came to test the clay courts in preparation for the Olympics. I am the champion here and everyone knows it,” Nadal said in the AI-generated video.
The AI version of Nadal criticized Djokovic, saying, “That no-good Djokovic has only won the French Open three times. He's childish. He may have the most Grand Slam titles, but he has no class. I am the greatest tennis player of all time. Fans who saw me today will tell their grandchildren that they saw God play tennis. I may be old but I'm the best to play tennis. Thank you, goodbye.”

Nadal's past encounters with videos made by AI
In early January, while the Australian Open 2024 was underway, social media users dug up old videos from the Laver Cup 2022 and edited them together. Of particular interest was Nadal's Spanish accent, often to the delight of those using AI for these videos.
For reference, here is the January video.
