President Donald Trump has launched his own branded website, TrumpRx, to give consumers discounts on prescription drugs for weight loss, fertility treatments, and more.
President Trump, who announced the platform Thursday at the White House, said dozens of commonly used medicines would be available at deep discounts.
“Starting tonight, dozens of the most commonly used prescription drugs will be available to all consumers at deep discounts,” he said.
President Trump said Americans have long paid some of the highest drug prices in the world, arguing that American consumers are effectively subsidizing drugs from other countries.
According to the president, pharmaceutical companies Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk have agreed to offer deep discounts on their GLP-1 weight loss drugs through the site.
Novo Nordisk’s Ozempic will drop from more than $1,000 per month to $199, and Eli Lilly’s Wigoby will drop from about $1,300 to $199.
According to information on the website, prices will gradually increase after the first two months.
“We were essentially subsidizing the entire world, hundreds of billions of dollars in subsidies every year,” Trump added.
“The United States has only 4 percent of the world’s population and consumes only 13 percent of all prescription drugs. Yet drug companies make 75 percent of their money from these drugs. Think about it: 75 percent of the money drug companies make comes from the United States.”
TrumpRx.gov lists 43 prescription drugs with discounts for conditions such as asthma, infertility and obesity.
