Pope Leo presented an encyclical on the risks of AI systems, warning that some autonomous weapons systems can be controlled “virtually beyond human reach.” The Pope said the Catholic Church wants to work with AI developers to discuss the appropriate use of the technology, and said humans should maintain primary control over AI systems.
