In a message signed by Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Pope Leo XIV to the UN AI in Geneva encourages the creation of frameworks and regulations for the nation to work in the common good.

Pope Leo XIII encouraged the state to establish AI frameworks and regulations so that they can be developed and used in Geneva, Switzerland on July 10th, in a message sent to AI participants on July 10th.
“I would like to take this opportunity to encourage you to look for it Cardinal Pietro Parolin said the message, signed by the Secretary of State, is to establish ethical clarity and coordinated local and global governance of AI.
The summit was held by the United Nations International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and is co-hosted by the Swiss government. The event will see participation from governments, technical leaders, academics and others interested in and collaborating with AI.
In this “an era of profound innovation,” where many people reflect “the meaning of being human,” the world “is facing immeasurable possibilities created by the digital revolution driven by artificial intelligence,” the Pope emphasized in his message.
AI requires an ethical management and regulatory framework
“It is important to consider the anthropological and ethical implications, the values that are on in crisis, and the obligations and regulatory frameworks necessary to support those values, as AI can autonomously adapt to many situations.”
He emphasized that “responsibility for the ethical use of AI systems begins with those who develop, manage and oversee them,” but users must share this mission as well. AI “needs “an appropriate human-centered ethical management and regulatory framework that goes beyond mere standards of utility or efficiency,” the Pope argued.
Building a peaceful society
Citing St. Augustine's concept of “the tranquility of order,” Pope Leo emphasized that this should be a common goal, and therefore that AI should cultivate a “peaceful and social society” that “contributed to human social relations” and “a peaceful and social society that contributed to human growth and the interests of human families.”
While AI can simulate human reasoning, perform tasks quickly and efficiently, and transform fields such as “education, work, arts, healthcare, governance, military, communication,” Pope Leo warned.
For him, the development of this technology must “hold hand in hand, respecting human and social values, the ability to judge with a clear conscience, and the growth of human responsibility.” It “needs discernment to ensure that AI is developed for the common good, constructed bridges of dialogue, and used to nurture fraternity,” the Pope urged. AI must serve “the interests of the whole human race.”
