PM Modi encourages BRICS to collectively pursue responsible use of AI
Brasilia: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called on BRICS countries to collectively pursue the responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI), highlighting the importance of balancing innovation and governance.
During the outreach session on enhancing multilateralism, economic and financial operations and artificial intelligence at the 17th BRICS Summit, the Prime Minister highlighted the need for a comprehensive, ethically guided AI framework within the group.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MEA) Secretary (Economics) Dam Rabbi, Prime Minister Modi emphasized that BRICS must ensure that AI governance prioritizes both innovation and safeguards.
“We believe that AI is a tool to enhance human values and capabilities,” the Prime Minister said, adding that India's approach to AI is shaped by the guiding mantra for “AI for All” and is being actively applied to many sectors.
Also, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who was taking part in the session, argued that AI should not become “a few clubs.” Guterres said, “All AI must benefit, especially developing countries.
However, he warned that effective and fair AI governance would not be achieved without facing systemic imbalances in a global order.
“We cannot govern effectively and fairly without facing deeper, structural imbalances in the global system,” he said, noting institutions such as the UN Security Council.
In pursuit of reforms to global governance mechanisms, Guterres said the world is currently multipolar and needs to be restructured to reconstruct the framework of multilateral governance, including the Security Council and international financial institutions, to reflect modern reality.
During the session, Prime Minister Modi reiterated India's belief in a multipolar world, and reiterated the role that BRICS helped shape it.
Speaking about the session, the Rabbi Chief said: “In a session on multilateralism, economic and fiscal issues and strengthening artificial intelligence, the Prime Minister said diversity and multipolarity are important strengths of BRICS.
“In this context, he also provided several proposals, including the establishment of a scientific research repository within the BRICS group by global Southern countries, focusing on ensuring and strengthening the resilience of key mineral supply chains, and on the BRICS group's commitment to responsible AI,” he added.
The proposed initiative will focus on strengthening the resilience of key mineral supply chains, particularly by global South countries.
India is scheduled to chair BRICS in 2026 and will hold the “AI Impact Summit.” Prime Minister Modi has invited BRICS countries to participate in the AI Summit.
