AI startup Luma Labs released Dream Machine last week, and their AI-powered video generation software is already incredibly popular. Demand for Dream Machine has overloaded Luma's servers, leading them to introduce a queuing system and daily prompt limits to their free plan. Now, users are testing the AI model by creating animated and extended versions of popular memes, and the results are making me LOL.
According to Know Your Meme, content creator Madni Agadi started the trend over the weekend in an X (formerly Twitter) thread, using Dream Machine to turn popular still image memes into videos, including “Distracted Boyfriend” and “Captain Picard's” infamous face flip.
Naturally, this thread inspired other users to try breathing new life into their favorite memes, and we've collected some of the best examples for you to check out below: We also tried our luck at making animations of our favorite still memes.
1. The Distracted Boyfriend
Luma AI's Dream Machine is just 3 days old. Now the memes are in the video. 10 wild examples: 1. Distracted boyfriend pic.twitter.com/QXNDQdkY4PJune 15, 2024
First up, an oldie (at least in terms of meme longevity) but a goodie. In the video, Distracted Boyfriend shows his eponymous partner sticking his nose into another woman as she passes by and starting to follow her. His girlfriend, just like the meme, looks around in shock. She also glances at the woman before staring into space, awkwardly staggering around as he walks, like video game character models stuck together.
2. Successful Children
Yay, success! The popular reaction image of a baby clenching his fist in satisfaction on the beach doesn't make much sense when made into a video. The baby shakes his fist a little and rocks back and forth, then quickly gets distracted and stares off into the distance at something (perhaps the same thing his girlfriend was looking at? I have a feeling this will be a crossover episode!)
3. Baby wearing Nike Jordans
Let's be free! https://t.co/QOSyBMthYC pic.twitter.com/BILnUHlxeDJune 16, 2024
We couldn't find a name for this meme on Know Your Meme, but it was just too funny not to include. In the original image, a baby is asleep on a mattress, wearing adult-sized Nike Jordans that make his tiny feet look noticeably smaller. Dream Machine took that exact cue and ran with it. Literally.
In the video, the baby floats up, crashes through the window, and sprints into a sunlit suburban garden. This video may be the most extreme, as the baby appears to float and run through the pane like a marionette held by invisible strings. But maybe there's a new, fashionable glassless window out there and I'm just old-fashioned.
4. Deez Nuts
Is this joke childish? Yes. Do you still do it regularly? Absolutely. Definitely the oldest meme on this list, the infamous Deez Nuts video (which predates YouTube) now has an extended version thanks to Dream Machine. And of them all, this one brought me the biggest laughs.
After delivering the punch line on the phone, his face falters for a second, then he suddenly turns his head to stare directly into the camera with a malicious look on his face, while a fake-out version of the “bang bang” sound from Law & Order plays.
5. I'm not going there anymore

I don't know why this meme always makes me laugh, but if it does, I thought it would be a great fit for a video. The Animal Crossing villagers' walking animation is pretty awkward, almost like they're moving paper dolls instead of 3D objects. And don't ask me what their shirts are doing; either the Dream Machine is trying to mimic a material that swings back and forth with their stride, or they mistook the shirt for a villager's body part. (Am I crazy, or does it just look a bit like that?) Breathing?) Dream Machine also generated an alphabet string from the original image's caption “I'm leaving.”
