In a groundbreaking cultural moment, Pakistani theatre group Mauji brings the epic Indian Ramayana to life on the Karachi stage, and has been praised for both the bold storytelling and innovative use of Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Media reports say the adaptation was performed at the Karachi Arts Council in Sindh, Pakistan over the weekend and provides a rare but praised example of Hindu mythology portrayed in Pakistan's mainstream art scene.
Directed by Yoheshwar Karera, the performance used AI to enhance visual storytelling, lighting and stage effects, infusing modern, immersive touches into ancient tales. Carrera said she was not threatened or feared repulsion by staging the Hindu epic.
“For me, bringing Ramayana to life on the stage is a visual treat, indicating that Pakistani society is often more tolerant than credit is given,” he said, according to a report by the PTI.
The play has been well received by audiences and critics, and praises its production efforts to bridge culture through art.
Producer and lead actress Raana Kazmi, who portrayed SITA, said she was drawn to the idea of turning ancient legends into a living breathing experience for a local audience.
Veteran art and film critic Omea Aravi praised the integrity and vibrant visuals of storytelling. He said dynamic lighting, live music, colorful outfits and inspiring designs all added to the grandeur of the show. He also said that the story is top class as Ramayana is a story that resonates with millions of stories around the world.
The production exists as a rare cultural crossover in the Pakistani theatre landscape, receiving applause to promote dialogue and mutual appreciation through mythical storytelling.
