Owkin announced a new multi-year collaboration with Sanofi focused on co-developing next-generation AI-powered biotherapeutics. The agreement includes a five-year license for Owkin’s AI Scientist platform, K Pro, and represents the latest phase of a partnership that has been in place since 2021.
The two companies initially entered into a €90 million strategic partnership centered on tumor disease targeting and patient subgrouping. This collaboration has since been expanded to support drug positioning activities within Sanofi’s immunology pipeline. The newly announced agreement further expands the scope by embedding AI-driven capabilities more deeply into pharmaceutical research and development workflows.
Under the partnership, Owkin will lead the end-to-end development of specialized AI agents designed specifically for Sanofi’s research and development needs. These systems are intended to act as intelligent assistants that can autonomously perform complex tasks throughout drug discovery and development programs. The agent will be deployed through the K Pro platform and is expected to complement Sanofi’s existing agent AI infrastructure.
K Pro combines multimodal patient data with specialized biological AI systems to support activities across the pharmaceutical value chain. The platform is designed to help from early-stage discovery to clinical development, while also providing competitive intelligence and analytical support aimed at enabling more accurate and informed decision-making.
Thomas Clozel, CEO and co-founder of Owkin, commented on the partnership: “Building on our partnership with Sanofi, this marks a move towards true embedded AI,” he added. “Orkin believes that by leveraging K Pro, Sanofi can further leverage agent systems within its own workflows, unlocking the full value of data and accelerating better decision-making across drug development.”
Sanofi highlighted the role of advanced AI technologies in its broader digital strategy. “Across Sanofi, we continue to invest in frontier AI solutions that have the potential to accelerate and improve decision-making throughout the drug development lifecycle,” said Emmanuel Frenehardt, chief digital officer at Sanofi. He added: “By introducing a purpose-built agent system into our workflow, we aim to empower our teams to work faster, deeper and with more confidence as we continue to deliver innovative outcomes for patients.”
This effort also aligns with Owkin’s broader goal of advancing biological artificial superintelligence, which the company believes will help address increasingly complex research and development challenges across the pharmaceutical industry.
