The Cohere agreement includes considering building Canadian commercial capacity to use and export AI, but there is little detail about what Cohere will do.
Cohere is a Toronto-based high-tech company that develops large-scale language models, a kind of language-focused generation AI. The company focuses on AI services for businesses.
The company said in a blog post Tuesday it signed “to change the public sector along with safe and sovereign AI technology.”
“Accelerating AI adoption will bring about greater productivity and efficiency at scale to enhance public services and modernize operations,” he said.
A spokesman for AI Minister Evan Solomon refused to respond to questions asking what the job entailed, and a spokesman for Co-Hore refused to provide details.
A government spokesperson said the deal did not include a “financial element.”
Using artificial intelligence to increase the efficiency of public services was one of Prime Minister Mark Kearney's election promises. Kearney has also committed to reducing the size of public services, and most departments and agencies have since been asked to find program spending cuts of up to 15%.
A government press release said that AI could “have a significant improvement in government operations and services for Canadians,” while Ottawa is “trying to leverage the power of this transformative technology to build a vibrant Canadian technology sector.”
