For 20 years, Brett Taylor has helped develop some of the world's most important technologies, including Google Maps, but it's AI that has brought a new inflection point to a society where it can abolish their work as a side effect.
In an interview with I've got it The podcast, released this week, noted that despite his success as a technology executive, he prefers to identify him as a computer programmer, including Stint as Facebook's (now Meta) chief technology officer and now Openai's chairman, Salesforce co-CEO.
However, the ability of AI to streamline programming and exchange several software development tasks and workers makes him wonder whether computer programmers will become the original “computer” method that was generally billed in mathematical calculations before the age of electronic computers.
Taylor said his anguish over his identity as a programmer comes from the fact that AI is a very productive.
“Self-identifying as a (computer programmer) is like this technology stripped it away, so it's kind of why I think these tools are being accepted so quickly.
He added that this early period of AI development would later be considered a “inflection point of society and technology,” and that the invention of the internet was just as important as it was in the 20th century.
Because of AI's productivity capabilities, Taylor made it strong incorporating it into Sierra, his own startup that he co-founded in 2023.
“People want these tools to be adopted. They want to make them want to do it, so they need to 'voluntell' them to do that. You know, we're not kidding the automation poster and I don't think we can make everything we do successful,” he said.
AI is more than just software, Taylor said, and he believes technology will promote the Internet and beyond. He is optimistic about the future of AI, but Taylor pointed out that the deep changes brought about by technology may become accustomed to it once it gets used to it, especially for people whose work is covered by AI, including computer programmers like her.
“You're probably having this transition period saying, 'How confused I'm starting to identify my worth as a person or as an employee.' “It's very uncomfortable and the transition isn't always easy,” he said.
