In the latest update, OpenAI plans to roll out AI-powered devices next year.

OpenAI has more than 200 staff members working on a suite of AI-powered devices, including smart speakers and possibly smart glasses and lamps, the Information reported on Friday, citing people familiar with the plans.

OpenAI’s first device, a smart speaker, will likely cost between $200 and $300, the report said, citing two people familiar with the smart speaker.

However, the speaker will be equipped with a camera that will capture information about the user and their surroundings, and is not expected to ship until February 2027 at the earliest, the report said.

According to the report, smart glasses will likely be ready for mass production in 2028.

The owner of ChatGPT entered the hardware industry with the $6.5 billion acquisition of former Apple designer Jony Ive’s startup io Products, aiming to capitalize on the growing demand for physical AI and augmented reality.

Meta, Facebook’s parent company, has had great success with its Ray-Ban smart glasses, which allow users to record, take photos and stream content through a small camera.

Additionally, Apple and Google are also reportedly working on their own AI-powered smart glasses.
