After launching on the Apple iOS ecosystem, OpenAI released the Sora app on Android, expanding the reach of its cutting-edge text-to-video generation technology. Following an initial invite-only release on iOS, the app is now available on the Google Play Store for users in select regions. As of this writing, the Sora Android app is only available in the United States, Canada, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam.
For those who aren’t familiar, Sora apps are built around the power of OpenAI’s Sora 2 video model. The app works similarly to social media feeds like TikTok and Instagram Reels, allowing users to view, create, and share AI-generated videos. With its release on Android, OpenAI removes previous barriers of invitation codes and waitlists.
The Sora app has not yet been released for everyone on iOS.
Overview of OpenAI Sora features
Sora is an advanced diffusion transformer model that transforms natural language prompts and images into rich, detailed video clips with automatically synchronized audio. Simply put, Sora is an AI model that can generate video clips with synchronized audio based on text-based prompts or provided images. Key technical features of OpenAI Sora models include:
long distance coherence: Sora, unlike Google’s Veo 3 model, is great at maintaining visual consistency across shots, ensuring that characters and objects stay the same even when they exit and re-enter the frame.
scene complexity: Sora can generate videos up to 60 seconds long that feature complex scenes with multiple characters, specific actions, and accurate representations of the physical world.
high fidelity: This model uses complex camera motions to generate videos up to 1080p resolution, with significantly improved realism in the text-to-video space.
Special features of the Sora app
Sora’s mobile app integrates these powerful generation tools and adds several social and creative features.
cameo function: The highlight of the app is Cameos, where users can upload a single video and audio clip to create their own personalized AI avatar. This cameo can be cast in scenarios generated by Sora’s prompts. This feature is now extended to humans as well as pets and generated characters.
remix and community: Users can remix existing creations by swapping out characters, changing styles, and expanding the story. The Sora app wanted to create a community that is collaborative and focused on experimentation.
professional features: For professional users, Sora 2 Pro offers high-quality, stable, production-grade output, along with features such as storyboarding for planning complex video narratives.
