New York is poised to play a central role in the development of artificial intelligence (AI), Openai executives told key business and civic leaders on Tuesday.
Openai CEO Sam Altman spoke at a private event hosted by the New York City Partnership, where the AI company revealed a report showing New York playing a central role in AI development.
Altman spoke to the business and civic leaders present, outlined how AI is progressing over the next three years, and outlined why he believes New York can play a leading role in AI development.
According to a copy of the Openai report obtained by Fox Business, New York is the world's top market for active users of the enterprise version of ChatGPT. It also ranks second in US states in terms of developers building products on Openai's infrastructure, but only follows California and Texas in terms of weekly ChatGPT users.

“Openai belongs here,” the company wrote in its report. Openai said there are more employees working in New York office buildings than other offices outside of San Francisco, and there is room for that size to triple.
“New York's world-class institutions of higher education and an attractive pull for alumni around the world helps us carry out our mission to build AI that benefits as many people as possible,” Openai writes.
According to sources familiar with the event, Openai's chief economist Ronnie Chatterj also spoke to civic leaders present on how AI can improve productivity and fuel economy growth.

The report says economists are broadly predicting increased productivity from AI in the low-end range of 0.06% to 18%. Openai explained that even at the low end, it would add billions of dollars to the US gross domestic product, given its nearly $30 trillion GDP.
He also states that factors that influence AI advancements include geography, organization and value.
Openai has implemented common sense rules to protect people from the harms of AI, adding that technology can help as many people as possible based on democratic values that the US represents at the global stage.

It also addressed concerns raised about the impact of AI on the workforce, as Openai's report writes that new innovations often complement employees rather than substitutes.
He also said that new technology could lead to the creation of new types of jobs, noting that most of the occupations in the workforce today did not exist before 1940.
