OpenAI is partnering with India’s Tata Group on artificial intelligence (AI) technology, including data center infrastructure that could be among the largest in the country.
OpenAI, which is raising over USD 100 billion, will work with the Tata Group and its technology services arm, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), to bring AI across its customers’ and its own operations.
One of the pillars of the deal is the development by TCS of a 100-megawatt data center, expandable to 1 gigawatt. Typically, a 1GW data center costs between USD 35 billion and USD 50 billion.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, currently in New Delhi for an AI summit, is undertaking a major construction effort to build data centers in the U.S. and abroad, aiming for a leading position in the AI space against rivals such as Alphabet and Anthropic PBC.
OpenAI announced it would invest up to US$500 billion through a project called Stargate, expanding it to US$1.4 trillion.
In India, OpenAI and TCS will be partnering to build what they call agent solutions for specific industries. Such AI services can operate autonomously under certain circumstances, limiting the need for human intervention.
