Reuters reports, citing sources, that OpenAI plans to unveil a new AI-powered search product that could challenge Google's dominance in the search market. The announcement could come a day before Google's annual I/O conference, scheduled for May 14th.
The report suggests that the search product is an extension of OpenAI's flagship ChatGPT product, allowing users to directly access web information and provide citations.
Although ChatGPT has been successful, it faces challenges in providing accurate and real-time web information. OpenAI previously integrated with Microsoft's Bing for paid users. Google has also introduced generative AI capabilities to its search engine.
Meanwhile, Perplexity, an AI search startup founded by former OpenAI researchers, is gaining popularity through its AI-native search interface. The startup boasts 10 million monthly active users.
OpenAI's ChatGPT was once the fastest app to reach 100 million monthly active users since its release in late 2022, but it has seen fluctuations in traffic since then. Amid pressure to expand its user base, OpenAI discontinued his ChatGPT plugin in April. This was an early attempt to update and incorporate real-world information into ChatGPT.
Google's current AI-generated search
Google introduced Generative Search last year at its I/O developer conference. This feature is available to users who have opted in. Google Generative Search Experience (SGE) provides a quick overview of Google search queries without having to click any links. Within the search, users can enter follow-up questions and see citations created for quick answers.
