The official statement reads, “We’re saying goodbye to the Sora app. Thank you to everyone who created, shared, and built a community around Sora. OpenAI also confirmed that it will provide a way for users to save videos they already created before the shutdown took effect. The company clarified that only the Sora app and its API will be deprecated, while the underlying Sora AI model and technology for generating videos from text prompts and images will still exist.
The move comes amid reports that OpenAI may integrate Sora’s video generation capabilities into ChatGPT, although the company has yet to officially confirm this. In a statement to Decrypt, OpenAI said the decision is part of a broader shift in focus to global simulation research to support robotics and long-term goals to support achieving AGI and developing more advanced AI capabilities.
The decision could also impact the company’s partnership with Disney, which is said to include access to more than 200 characters and a major equity investment. OpenAI has not disclosed the reason for the closure, but reports say no financial transactions have taken place so far.
