O’Melveny & Myers completes acquisition of AI data security business

AI For Business

This acquisition will facilitate further development of our Zero Trust approach to security, backed by access data and identity mapping.

Global law firm O’Melveny & Myers has provided legal advice to AI data security business Symmetry Systems on its agreed acquisition by cybersecurity platform Zscaler.

O’Melveny’s advisory team was led by partner David Makarechian, chairman of the emerging technology group and head of the firm’s Northern California corporate practice, advisor AJ Tart, and associate Robin Chang.

Zscaler, headquartered in San Jose, California, specializes in Zero Trust security, a technique that imposes strict access controls rather than automatic “trust.” We use AI to combat cyberthreats for our customer base of government agencies, critical infrastructure organizations, and large enterprises.

San Francisco-based Symmetry Systems provides a comprehensive data + AI security platform for applications across cloud environments, SaaS applications, and on-premises data stores such as mainframes, legacy systems, and air-gapped environments. Its identity mapping and access graph analyzes how human and non-human entities, data, and applications are connected and the data they access, providing valuable information about how AI agents communicate and function.

With this acquisition, the companies will combine their approaches to build stronger Zero Trust capabilities based on a foundation of identity and behavioral data analytics, while facilitating immediate detection of anomalies, rapid identification of agents or damage after identity compromise, and reliable deployment of trusted AI agents.

Mohit Tiwari, CEO of Symmetry Systems: “At Symmetry Systems, our mission is thorough security research that truly earns our customers love. Zscaler is an inspiration on both counts. We believe that the dominant security platform in the AI era will control the flow of information between identities on zero-trust networks. Because AI disintermediates applications, endpoints, and traditional network boundaries, identities and data will take new control over enterprise security. In a world where legacy security models increasingly operate at the wrong layer of abstraction, Symmetry Systems and Zscaler are working together to build information flow networks for the AI era.”

Jay Chaudhry, Chairman and CEO of Zscaler, commented: “As enterprises rapidly adopt AI, old playbooks for managing access built around users and directories don’t scale to millions of AI agents. With Symmetry Systems, we’re adding an access graph that maps how every identity, application, and data source is connected across the enterprise. This fundamental visibility is Zscaler’s ground zero. Trust Exchange is used to manage agent-to-agent and application-to-application and agent-to-agent communications at scale, giving customers the practical control they need to securely embrace AI. ”

The transaction is subject to customary closing conditions and is expected to close within the next few days.
