Ohio State today announced an ambitious new initiative to ensure that all students graduate from the AI proficiency needed to compete and lead now, thus poised for artificial intelligence to reconstruct the future of learning and work.
The Ohio AI Fluency initiative, launched this fall for first-year students, incorporates AI education into the core of all undergraduate curriculum, with the ability to not only use AI tools for students, but also understand, question and innovate regardless of their major.
As a result, you will not only have technical AI skills, but also graduate with a wealth of understanding of how the ethical and safe use of AI tools can be used forever across disciplines such as healthcare, computer science, agriculture, and humanities. Starting with the 2029 class, all Buckeye alumni are proficient in AI and can proceed with the field responsibly.

AI is an important education priority developed by the Citizenship 2035 Strategic Plan Carter. The plan aims to redefine the future of higher education with a focus on academic excellence and the spirit of adaptability and innovation across the institution to meet the needs of the next generation.
AI-style ency for all students
AI literacy and experiential learning are fundamental expectations for all undergraduate students, regardless of their major. The initial steps begin in fall 2025.
- All undergraduates will introduce the basics of generating AI at the required general education launch seminar.
- The Genai Workshop will be integrated into the First Year Success series, part of the university's necessary research courses that will help you adjust to your university life. Additional workshops will be provided to provide students of all levels with experience in AI tools and applications.
- A new “Unlock Generation AI” course will be offered and open to all majors. Students acquire important skills to effectively interact with AI, and Craft stimulates creativity and prompts them to explore the impact of AI on society.
“Through AI ency, Ohio students become “bilingual.” You will be able to thrive in both key areas of research and the application of AI in that area,” said Rabbi V. Belamonda, Executive Vice President and Provost. “Based on strong responsibility and possibilities, we prepare Ohio students to leverage the power of AI and lead the way in shaping the future of their field of research.”
Incorporating AI into general education enables students from all fields to build a fundamental understanding of AI's impact and ethical considerations. Ohio universities will become important partners in integrating AI flow ency across university programs and courses. This is to expand existing AI-centric products that allow students to build sophisticated skills and critical thinking across their fields. The university also has the opportunity to inject AI into courses and programs that serve alumni and professional students.
Teacher and instructor authority
AI Fluency helps Ohio faculty and instructors in innovate and integrate AI tools and applications into classrooms and learning spaces. To that end, the university will increase the resources and support to build and modify courses that enable instructors to deepen and considerate integration into their degree pathways and allow any field to benefit from AI-Aigmented courses.
Michael V. Drake Institute for Teaching and Learning expands resources to help integrate AI into education, including launching funds that provide financial and advisory instructor support. The initial request for additional details and proposals for the fund will be made available at the beginning of the 2025-26 academic year. The expertise of Center for Software Innovation and other Ohio State units also ensures that this effort can be guided at scale.
The initiative also helps faculty in navigating practical questions about the future of learning, including the ethical and responsible use of AI in the classroom, and the evolution of student examinations and evaluation in an AI-driven world.
The flow ency of AI is based on existing strengths and distinctions of Ohio faculty. Ohio faculty members are driving a future of AI research, development and discovery to improve the lives of people today and build a brighter future.

Core of AI student innovation
Ohio allows all students (undergraduate, graduate, professional) to become entrepreneurs through hands-on experience and real-world applications. Development initiatives include AI-driven hackathons, programs for gaining work experience, and practical workshops for product construction and prototyping. The Center for Software Innovation and other university expertise centers will work with Ohio faculty members to help develop custom AI content in their research fields. By integrating AI education throughout the curriculum, Ohio will prepare the next generation not only for AI technology consumers, but also for creators and innovators, ensuring they are in a position to contribute and lead the AI-driven economy.
