Meta and Oakley are officially collaborating to launch a new category of “performance AI glasses” designed for athletes and sports fans. The collaboration's first product, Oakley Meta HSTN, was announced, combining Sunglass Brand's famous style with Meta's growth portfolio of wearable AI technology. The new devices aim to compete in the emerging smart eyewear market. This is a space that Apple is also quietly exploring.
The Oakley Meta HSTN glasses are designed for active lifestyles and feature a built-in 12 megapixel ultra-width camera that can capture high-quality photos and 3K videos, allowing users to capture hands-free perspectives. The frame also integrates modest open-ear speakers with no blocking ambient sound, listening to music, making calls, and listening to AI responses. IPX4 resistance assessments have been built to handle splashes, sweat and rain. The launch came just after a recent update on Meta's Ray-Ban Smart Glasses, with features like live translation added.

At the heart of the experience is the built-in meta AI assistant that can be active with the phrase “Hey Meta.” Users can request real-time information, such as checking wind speeds on golf courses, getting instructions, and identifying songs being played nearby. Glasses supports the playback of music from major services such as Spotify, Amazon Music, and Apple Music. It also handles calls and messaging from WhatsApp, Messenger, and users' native phone apps, and direct messaging support for Instagram will soon be here.
The Meta also improves battery life on the HSTN model, promising typical use for up to 8 hours on a single charge. The included charging case can provide up to 40 hours of extra power on the go.

The transition from the meta shows the clear intention to establish a strong foothold in the AI wearables market before other major players enter. Apple is accelerating the development of its own smart glasses for a potential 2026 release, and is developing a dedicated chip to power the device.
The limited edition Oakley Meta HSTN will be available for pre-order on July 11th for $499, with standard collections starting at $399 later this summer. The first launch includes the US, Canada, the UK and several other European countries, with further expansion planned later this year.
