Rabat – DW published a detailed report revealing how AI-generated videos are targeting Morocco as severe weather-induced flooding hits the country.
On Saturday, the news agency shine light on About the fake news and misleading information about the floods in Morocco that has been circulating on social media and in the press in recent days.
“The most damaging and impactful videos were those that showed catastrophic situations that did not actually occur,” the report said.
DW particularly highlighted the case of the heavy rains that hit Safi, Morocco in December 2025, and the current floods that have hit several regions in recent weeks and forced the evacuation of 188,000 people.
This article documents how a flood of influential images are mixed with fake and AI-generated content on social media, including one TikTok post that received 3 million views.
Notably, the post showed scenes of violent torrents sweeping away streets and flooding entire neighborhoods.
The same statement alleges that Moroccan authorities failed to provide timely information on flooding and the release of water from dams.
However, DW’s team found that the video was fabricated and generated by AI, highlighting evidence such as some missing scenes, unrealistic visuals, and flaws in the overall content.
One of the flaws detected by the DW team also included another TikTok video with more than 210,000 views that showed a reporter purportedly covering the floods.
“However, after careful analysis, it became clear that the footage was not real and was generated by AI,” DW stressed.
During and after Morocco recently hosted AFCON, many exploited the tournament (including the chaotic finals) to spread a tsunami of fake news.
Trolling pages exploited the tournament to spread fake news and disinformation. These included popular fake stories such as: Originated from rumors claiming death of stadium staff.
In the midst of frustration, Fake news quickly found room to add fuel to the fire, in some cases leading to hateful comments online.
