Nvidia’s AI video detector seems like a tool the world desperately needs

As technology companies continue to invest unprecedented amounts of resources and money into building the latest AI models, one aspect is commonly ignored: creating tools that can detect AI images.

Nvidia, the chipmaker that has benefited most from AI so far, is moving forward. At SIGGRAPH 2026, a computer graphics conference in Los Angeles, Nvidia announced Synthetic Video Detector, an AI-powered verification tool that accurately and quickly detects AI videos.

“The service analyzes video frames and extracts statistical patterns in the frequency domain that are indicative of diffusion-based generation,” Nvidia said. “Designed to be robust against common video compression artifacts, ensuring reliable performance across real-world video inputs.”

The frames are then passed to two Vision Transformers, which analyze and rank them from 0 to 1. 0 indicates a real frame and 1 indicates a fake frame. The scores for all frames are then averaged to give a percentage score out of 100.

For high-resolution 1080p video, Nvidia says the Synthetic Video Detector (SVD) can achieve 92% accuracy. Additionally, the Nvidia RTX system, a specialized visual computing and graphics card, can process uncompressed video in just 22 milliseconds.

However, most videos on the internet are compressed, so the artifacts used to determine whether the SVD is real or generated by AI are missing from the frame. Therefore, for a 15% compressed video, the detection accuracy drops to 87%, and to 82% if the video is 50% compressed.

Nvidia is pitching SVD as a microservice for newsrooms to use in their editorial and media workflows.

“Rather than replacing established validation practices, microservices provide another signal for time-sensitive decision-making, helping teams move quickly while protecting editorial standards and ensuring public trust,” Nvidia said.

SVD is part of Nvidia’s AI for Media private access program and is not generally available. However, there is a demo version that you can try online.
