- Nvidia debuted new AI tools targeting video game experiences at Computex Taipei.
- This tool has the potential to change the way players interact with non-player characters.
- The announcement comes as the chipmaker’s stock price explodes.
There can be dozens, if not hundreds, of non-player characters (NPCs) in just one video game. These computer-controlled characters range from Tom Nook, the village shop owner in Animal Crossing, to Zelda, the princess of Hyrule and the Nintendo series of the same name.
The graphics and basic dialogue of these characters may have advanced in the last few decades, but the interactions still feel static and scripted.
Chip maker Nvidia plans to use AI to change things.
On Monday, Nvidia CEO and co-founder Jensen Huang gave a two-hour talk about the company’s future hardware and AI services at the opening of Computex, the annual computer show held in Taipei.
Avatar Cloud Engine (ACE) is a new custom AI service that game developers can deploy to make conversations and general interactions with NPCs feel more realistic.
The core principles of ACE relate to real-time conversations and animated facial expressions.
According to the press release, ACE’s extensive language model allows NPCs to have backstories, personalities, and goals, allowing player interactions to fit the context of the game.
Additionally, ACE has technology that provides automatic speech recognition to NPCs, which NVIDIA says will be able to respond to the player’s vocal patterns.
Nvidia says these characters can also generate facial expressions based on the voice input they receive.
The technologies used in a fictional game called “Kairos” are:
The video shows Jin, an NPC who owns a ramen shop, showing an anguished expression while explaining the increasing crime around his restaurant.
What makes this brief exchange different from other video game encounters is how Jhin reacts to and reacts to the player.
“Although he’s an NPC, Jin responds to natural language queries realistically and in line with the story’s backstory, all with the help of generative AI,” Nvidia said in a press release. .
Nvidia did not respond to an insider’s request for comment.
The ACE announcement came as Nvidia’s value exploded. The Santa Clara-based company increased its market cap by more than $200 billion in just one day last week, making it the largest single-day market gain in history.
Nvidia, originally focused on computer graphics, has been at the forefront of generative AI since ChatGPT is powered by the company’s H-100 graphics processor unit (GPU). This chip accelerates the chatbot’s ability to build responses based on text prompts, enabling conversational AI capabilities.
In his Computex keynote, Huang also touched on AI bridging the digital divide. He said that with modern AI tools, anyone can become a programmer.
