Nvidia DLSS 5: AI enhances video game visuals

AI Video & Visuals

Nvidia announced DLSS 5, a new artificial intelligence tool designed to enhance the visual realism of video games.

This technology uses AI models to generate photorealistic lighting and materials in real-time during gameplay. Analyzes and enhances game frames with effects such as realistic lighting, reflections, and detailed textures for characters, hair, fabric, skin, and other elements.

The company described the update as the most significant advancement in computer graphics since the introduction of real-time ray tracing in 2018. Unlike traditional rendering, which requires significant computing power, DLSS 5 aims to deliver improved visuals while maintaining smooth performance at up to 4K resolution.

The system is trained to understand complex scene elements and environmental lighting conditions, producing images that remain consistent with the original 3D content. Game developers can adjust the strength and application of enhancements to maintain each game’s unique visual style.

Nvidia says major publishers are already working to support the technology, including Bethesda, CAPCOM, Ubisoft, Tencent, and Warner Bros. Games. Titles scheduled to feature DLSS 5 include Starfield, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Resident Evil Requiem, Hogwarts Legacy, and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered.

DLSS was originally introduced in 2018 as a performance improvement tool for upscaling resolution and generating frames. The company said it has since been integrated into more than 750 games.
