NSF Awards Enable Adoption of Advanced Computing and Data Resources

Mizzou Engineer leads a project to improve access to the research and educational computing resources needed to harness artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML).

Grant Scott, an associate professor of electrical engineering and computer science at the MU Institute of Data Science and Informatics, was awarded a $980,000 award from the National Science Foundation for this work. The award, CC* Regional Computing: Great Plains Extended Network of GPUs for Interactive Experimenters, was launched on July 1st.
“This award will help accelerate the deployment of advanced computing and data resources in the Great Plains Network region,” said Scott. “This project will increase the number of researchers and students with access to both local and national computing resources, strengthen the capacity of campus research computing professionals, and expand regional research capacity.”
This project gives researchers the opportunity to use local computing resources to develop early ideas and code into more advanced AI/ML code. Researchers are trained and supported to adapt these workbench codes to high-throughput computing code that can run on national platforms such as Open Science Grid and National Research Platform.
“Such success will increase institutional buy-in for sustainable regional and national research computing systems,” Scott said.
The initiative will leverage existing collaborations to provide and manage graphics processing unit (GPU) resources in Missouri, North Dakota, South Dakota, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas. It has been used computationally in a variety of studies within the region, such as the generation of 3D protein molecules, the use of satellite imagery for deep learning in mapping wildfire-burnt regions, the detection of dark matter and neutrinos, and the real-time monitoring of surface phenology. addressing needs. Generate cybersecurity attack graphs and implement intelligent manufacturing through digital twins.
One of our goals is to promote adoption of JupyterLab computing notebooks, part of an open-source computing environment where researchers and students can analyze data, develop models, and share their work with others. and to strengthen STEM research and education.
