Dive Insight:
This financial commitment resonates with NIST's comprehensive strategy aimed at solidifying the United States' position as a frontrunner in critical emerging technologies, including AI, quantum computing, biotechnology, and semiconductors.
NIST intends to leverage “existing resources” to enhance its expertise and implement directives proposed in the Trump administration's AI Action Plan, released in July, to achieve a state of “AI dominance.”
“Our goal is to remove barriers to American AI innovation and accelerate the global application of AI technology,” said NIST Acting Director Craig Burkhardt.
Our expanded collaboration with Miter will leverage AI to help U.S. companies improve product manufacturing efficiency and meet domestic and international market demands.
Burkhardt emphasized that the partnership will also foster closer collaboration with academic and industry leaders to explore and commercialize new technologies and devices.
The centers have been designated as the AI Economic Security Center for U.S. Manufacturing Productivity and the AI Economic Security Center for Protecting America's Critical Infrastructure from Cyber Threats, but specific locations have not yet been announced.

NIST expects these AI centers to foster breakthroughs in applied science and technology and create “disruptive and innovative solutions” that address the most pressing challenges facing the nation.
In the coming months, the agency plans to reveal the winner of a public competition for a new Manufacturing USA Institute with a budget of up to $70 million over five years focused on AI in manufacturing.
