Newsom’s Office Touts Humanity’s ‘Partnership’, California Claude 50% Off

AI For Business

Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom’s office announced Monday that California government agencies and local governments will have access to Anthropic’s Claude artificial intelligence platform at a 50% discount.

“With this agreement, state agencies will have access to Claude, Anthropic’s AI productivity assistant, at a 50% discount, as well as free workforce training, expert technical assistance from GenAI, and workflow input from Anthropic developers. This agreement also provides similar discount benefits to local governments in California, including cities and counties,” the press release said.

“Claude is the first AI productivity tool available to all state agencies through the California Institute of Technology’s new Statewide Information Technology Sharing Service (SITeS) portal, which centralizes AI tools in one place with transparent pricing for key business use cases, including improving operational efficiency, strengthening data security, and optimizing the state employee experience,” the announcement continued.

Newsom, who has been in office since early 2019, is term-limited again this year, and after winning a recall battle in 2021, he was up for re-election in 2022.

“This partnership is about using technology the Californian way: serving people responsibly, transparently and responsibly. AI should not replace human jobs in government. AI should help workers act faster, solve problems more effectively, and deliver better outcomes for Californians,” the governor said in a statement.

“As a California company, we feel a real responsibility to our home state, and we are honored to expand our partnership with California distributors and put Claude to work for the people who keep this state running,” said Americas Director Kate Jensen. “Building AI that serves people responsibly has been our approach from the beginning, and this partnership puts that into practice.”

The governor’s office indicated the state is already leveraging Claude.

“California is already leveraging Claude in state government, including leveraging tools to promote Engaged California, the nation’s first deliberative democracy platform announced by Governor Newsom last year, to help give Californians a stronger voice in policy decisions,” the agency said. “Claude was also used to develop the state’s Poppy, a simple AI tool designed by and for state employees through pre-built, easy-to-use queries tailored to common state business needs, driving more reliable results.

“As a California company, we feel a real responsibility to our home state, and we are honored to expand our partnership with California distributors and put Claude to work for the people who keep this state running,” Americas regional director Kate Jensen said in a statement. “Building AI that serves people responsibly has been our approach from the beginning, and this partnership puts that into practice.”
